The US Open 2025 started with a major upset as France’s Benjamin Bonzi eliminated former champion Daniil Medvedev in a thrilling five-set battle. Bonzi outlasted the 13th seed 6-3, 7-5, 6-7(5), 0-6, 6-4 in one of the most dramatic matches of the opening round.
Bonzi came out strong, claiming the first set 6-3 with aggressive baseline play and fearless shot-making. He continued his momentum in the second set, breaking Medvedev at a crucial stage to take it 7-5, shocking fans who expected the Russian to dominate.
Medvedev, fighting to stay alive, clawed back in the third set, winning a tense tiebreak 7-6(5). He then roared back in style, storming through the fourth set 6-0, raising hopes of a comeback reminiscent of his past Slam battles.
But Bonzi refused to back down. Staying composed in the deciding set, the Frenchman broke early and held his nerve to seal the match 6-4, celebrating one of the biggest victories of his career.
With this stunning win, Bonzi moves into the second round, while Medvedev’s campaign at Flushing Meadows comes to a shocking early end.
