Italy’s tennis dominance hit new heights as World No. 1 Jannik Sinner clinched the Davis Cup crown for the second consecutive year in Malaga, capping off a standout 2024 season. Sinner defeated the Netherlands’ Tallon Griekspoor 7-6(2), 6-2, sealing a 2-0 victory after Matteo Berrettini’s earlier win over Botic van de Zandschulp.
“It has been an amazing year,” Sinner reflected. “I’m incredibly proud of the entire team. We worked hard for this, and to lift the trophy again is truly special.”
The victory made Italy the first nation to defend the Davis Cup title since the Czech Republic achieved the feat in 2013. For Sinner, the win marked a stellar end to a season that saw him claim the Australian Open, US Open, and Nitto ATP Finals, along with a jaw-dropping 73-6 singles record.
In Sunday’s final, Sinner showcased his trademark resilience. After saving two break points in the first set, he dominated the tiebreak to take control. Despite a brief hiccup in the second set, Sinner reeled off four consecutive games to secure the match in 91 minutes, setting off euphoric celebrations with his teammates.
Earlier in the day, Berrettini laid the foundation for victory with a commanding 6-4, 6-2 win over Van de Zandschulp. The former Top 10 player fired 16 aces and didn’t face a single break point. Berrettini’s contribution was particularly meaningful, as he had missed Italy’s 2023 triumph due to injuries. “It feels amazing to play my part this year,” he said. “Our team’s unity and heart on the court make all the difference.”
Italy’s success underscores its rise in tennis, with contributions from players like Lorenzo Musetti and Simone Bolelli adding depth to an already formidable squad. Captain Filippo Volandri praised his team’s determination, saying, “Making history is about doing it twice, and I couldn’t be prouder.”
Despite falling short, the Netherlands made history by reaching their first Davis Cup final, highlighted by their dramatic quarterfinal win over Spain, which marked the end of Rafael Nadal’s illustrious career.
As Sinner and his teammates lifted the Davis Cup trophy again, it was clear that Italian tennis is enjoying a golden era, with 2024 serving as a testament to their unparalleled teamwork and individual brilliance.
