Carlos Alcaraz Wins 2025 Cincinnati Open After Jannik Sinner Retires with Illness

Carlos Alcaraz lifted the 2025 Cincinnati Open men’s singles trophy under unexpected circumstances after World No. 1 Jannik Sinner was forced to retire ill while trailing 5-0 in the first set of Monday’s final.

The highly anticipated showdown between tennis’ two brightest young stars ended prematurely after just 22 minutes, when Sinner, struggling with illness and visible discomfort in his right arm, called the trainer and conceded the match.

A Rivalry Cut Short

This final had promised another thrilling chapter in the Alcaraz–Sinner rivalry, which has already delivered two Grand Slam finals this year. Alcaraz triumphed at Roland Garros, while Sinner answered back at Wimbledon. Monday’s outcome, however, left fans disappointed, as the Italian was unable to continue his pursuit of a fifth Masters 1000 crown.

Sinner, the defending champion in Cincinnati, expressed heartfelt apologies to the crowd during the ceremony:

“Since yesterday I didn’t feel great. I thought it would improve overnight, but it got worse. I tried to play even a little, but I couldn’t handle more. I’m really, really sorry.”

Alcaraz Extends Winning Streak

For Alcaraz, the victory may not have come in the way he envisioned, but it still adds to an impressive season. The 22-year-old Spaniard has now extended his Masters 1000 winning streak to 17 matches, after already lifting titles in Monte Carlo and Rome earlier this year.

With the triumph, he also becomes the youngest Cincinnati champion since Andy Murray in 2008, and joins fellow Spaniards Carlos Moya (2002) and Rafael Nadal (2013) on the prestigious winners’ list.

Addressing the situation with empathy, Alcaraz said:

“This is not the way I want to win matches or trophies. I just want to say sorry, and I know Jannik will come back stronger—he always does. He’s a true champion.”

Looking Ahead to the US Open

Both stars will now turn their attention to the US Open in New York. Alcaraz is set to partner Emma Raducanu in the mixed doubles event, while Sinner will join forces with Katerina Siniakova.

Despite the shortened final, the Spaniard’s dominance on hard courts and his ability to consistently deliver titles make him one of the strongest favorites heading into the year’s last Grand Slam.
