Canada’s top tennis talents Felix Auger-Aliassime and Denis Shapovalov saw their runs end in the Round of 16 at the 2025 Terra Wortmann Open in Halle, Germany. Despite flashes of brilliance, both players couldn’t break through to the quarterfinals in this prestigious grass-court warm-up for Wimbledon.
Felix Auger-Aliassime faced a tough challenge against No. 8 seed Karen Khachanov. The Canadian struggled in the opening set, losing 3-6, but bounced back impressively in the second, dominating 6-1. However, he couldn’t sustain that momentum in the decider, ultimately falling 3-6, 6-1, 3-6. Auger-Aliassime showed signs of confidence on serve and rallied well in the second set, but Khachanov’s consistency and ability to pressure Felix’s second serve proved decisive.
Meanwhile, Denis Shapovalov’s match against Italy’s rising star Flavio Cobolli was a rollercoaster. After losing a tight first-set tiebreak 6-7(2), Shapovalov leveled the match by taking the second set 6-4 with aggressive returns and dynamic shot-making. The third set saw another tiebreak, but Cobolli edged it out 7-6(5), ending Shapovalov’s run in heartbreaking fashion. Shapovalov displayed glimpses of his classic left-handed flair, but errors in key moments cost him dearly.
Elsewhere in the Round of 16, Alexander Bublik shocked world No. 1 Jannik Sinner, winning 3-6, 6-3, 6-4, while German No. 1 Alexander Zverev delighted the home crowd with a hard-fought 3-6, 6-4, 7-6(2) victory over Italy’s Lorenzo Sonego. Tomas Machac continued his strong season with a straight-sets win over Fábián Marozsán, and Tomás Etcheverry upset No. 4 seed Andrey Rublev in a thrilling 6-3, 6(4)-7, 7-6(6) battle.
With Wimbledon on the horizon, both Auger-Aliassime and Shapovalov will look to regroup, sharpen their grass-court game, and aim for deeper runs at SW19. For now, their exit in Halle highlights both their potential and the fine margins that define elite-level tennis.
