In a thrilling semifinal match at the Rolex Paris Masters, Alexander Zverev triumphed over Holger Rune, defeating him 6-3, 7-6(4) and securing his spot in the finals for the second time. This victory not only marks Zverev’s first hard-court final of the season but also solidifies his return to the No. 2 ranking in the ATP standings.
The match lasted an intense hour and 46 minutes, showcasing Zverev’s resilience and skill. After a steady performance, the third-seeded German seemed on track to close out the match but faced a late surge from Rune. The young Danish player, who had his own hopes of reaching the season-ending Nitto ATP Finals, showed remarkable tenacity, even breaking Zverev’s serve when he was down 5-4 in the second set.
Zverev, however, displayed his experience and composure during the crucial tiebreak. He took control early, winning five of the first seven points to seal his victory. “I feel like I made it a little difficult for myself,” Zverev admitted post-match. “But he is a champion, and I’m happy to be in my second final here. I’m looking forward to it.”
This win is Zverev’s third over Rune in 2024, and it comes after a season filled with ups and downs. Zverev has now achieved 65 wins this year, tying him with Jannik Sinner for the most on Tour in 2024. He is chasing his seventh ATP Masters 1000 title and will face either French star Ugo Humbert or former champion Karen Khachanov in the finals on Sunday.
Zverev previously reached the Paris final in 2020, where he fell to Daniil Medvedev. This time, he enters as the favorite, with his eyes set on the trophy. After overcoming a rough patch earlier in the season, this hard-earned victory has given Zverev renewed momentum as he aims to reclaim his place among the elite in men’s tennis.
With his sights set on the prestigious title, Zverev’s journey in Paris continues as he looks to make history and solidify his standing ahead of the upcoming ATP Finals in Turin.
