Alexander Zverev Shines in Turin, Outplays Alcaraz to Secure ATP Finals Semifinal Spot
Alexander Zverev delivered a stellar performance on Friday to defeat Carlos Alcaraz 7-6 (5), 6-4, securing his place in the semifinals of the 2024 Nitto ATP Finals. The win extended Zverev’s impressive winning streak to eight matches and guaranteed his top spot in the John Newcombe Group.
Facing Alcaraz for the first time since their Roland Garros final clash, Zverev held his nerve in a match filled with intensity and high stakes. Despite seven missed break-point opportunities in the first set, the German’s relentless power and precision ultimately proved decisive. A tight tiebreak saw Zverev fend off a spirited Alcaraz comeback to clinch the opener.
“He’s beaten me in some crucial matches this year, so I’m thrilled to have won this one,” Zverev said post-match. “We have a great rivalry and friendship, and it’s always special to share the court with him.”
Zverev carried his momentum into the second set, breaking Alcaraz early and saving two break points to maintain his lead. Despite Alcaraz’s tenacity, the Spaniard, battling breathing issues throughout the tournament, fell short. The victory marked Zverev’s second consecutive group-stage win over Alcaraz at the ATP Finals, taking their head-to-head record to 6-5 in Zverev’s favor.
Zverev’s dominance was underscored by his nine aces and 73% success rate on first serves. Notably, he hasn’t dropped serve in his last four matches, a streak dating back to his Rolex Paris Masters triumph.
Next, Zverev faces fifth seed Taylor Fritz, a familiar foe who has bested him in their last three encounters, including two Grand Slam clashes this year. “The semifinals will be tough,” Zverev admitted. “Taylor has been in great form, and I’ll need to bring my best.”
For Alcaraz, the loss leaves his semifinal hopes hanging by a thread, dependent on Andrey Rublev’s match against Casper Ruud later in the evening.
Zverev’s commanding form and mental fortitude have set the stage for an electrifying semifinal showdown in Turin, as he chases his third ATP Finals crown.
