Poland secured a dramatic 2-0 victory over hosts Spain to book their spot in the Billie Jean King Cup quarter-finals, setting up a clash with Czechia. Magda Linette’s marathon triumph and Iga Swiatek’s gritty win highlighted Poland’s resilience in Malaga.
Linette’s match against Sara Sorribes Tormo was a grueling spectacle, lasting nearly four hours—just shy of the competition’s record. Linette staged an extraordinary comeback from 0-3 down in the deciding set to clinch a 7-6(6), 2-6, 6-4 victory. Exhausted but elated, she said, “I want to be happy and cry at the same time. It was tough, but I gave everything.”
World No. 2 Iga Swiatek followed up by overcoming Paula Badosa in a three-set thriller, 6-3, 6-7(5), 6-1. After dominating the first set, Swiatek weathered a strong resurgence from Badosa, who thrived on home crowd energy. Swiatek regrouped in the final set, breaking Badosa’s serve four times to seal the win.
“Magda’s match inspired me,” Swiatek said. “I’m proud we’ve reached this stage, and the energy from the crowd made it even more special.”
With their top-tier performances, Poland enters Saturday’s quarter-final brimming with confidence against a strong Czechia team.
