Pegula Shines on Grass: Defeats Swiatek to Claim Third Title of 2025 at Bad Homburg

Jessica Pegula continues to make 2025 her standout year on the WTA Tour, capturing her third title of the season with a commanding win over former World No. 1 Iga Swiatek at the Bad Homburg Open. In a high-quality final, Pegula defeated Swiatek 6-4, 7-5 to clinch her second career grass-court title and head into Wimbledon brimming with confidence.

The World No. 3 showed poise and precision throughout the 1-hour and 46-minute battle, facing just one break point—which she saved—and finding her best level when it mattered most, particularly at the tail end of each set. This title adds to her earlier triumphs in Austin (hard courts) and Charleston (green clay), marking wins on all three major surfaces this season.

In contrast, Swiatek was bidding for her first grass-court title and her first WTA crown since Roland Garros 2024. While she fired nine aces and struck 30 winners, her total of 39 unforced errors cost her dearly. Despite the loss, Swiatek took plenty of positives from her first-ever final on grass. “This tournament showed that there is hope for me on grass,” she said, reflecting on her solid run that included a semifinal victory over defending Wimbledon finalist Jasmine Paolini.

Pegula’s response was heartfelt: “I know you say you can’t play on grass, but trust me, you’re still very, very good on grass. So cut yourself some slack.”

Pegula’s win over Swiatek marks her fourth in their last six encounters and cements her status as a major contender ahead of Wimbledon. The two stars could meet again in the Wimbledon semifinals, as both have landed in the bottom half of the draw. Pegula, seeded third, opens against Italy’s Elisabetta Cocciaretto, while Swiatek, the eighth seed, is projected to face No. 2 seed Coco Gauff in the quarters.

Pegula’s success this season across multiple surfaces, including her composed win in Bad Homburg, makes her a serious threat at Wimbledon 2025. With grass no longer a weak link in her game, fans and opponents alike should take note.
