Spanish tennis star Paula Badosa made a strong statement at the Merida Open Akron, delivering a commanding performance in the Round of 16. The tournament’s second seed breezed past Romania’s Jaqueline Cristian, securing a 6-2, 6-1 victory to book her spot in the quarterfinals.
Badosa in Full Control
From the very first point, Badosa looked sharp and in control, using her powerful groundstrokes to dictate play. Cristian struggled to keep up with the Spaniard’s aggressive baseline game, as Badosa quickly wrapped up the first set 6-2. The second set was even more one-sided, with Badosa breaking her opponent multiple times to seal the win in under an hour.
After an injury-plagued 2023 season, Badosa seems to be regaining her top form, and this dominant performance is a clear indication that she is a serious contender for the Merida Open Akron title.
Other Round of 16 Results
While Badosa impressed, there were other notable results in the Round of 16:
- Daria Saville (AUS) def. Anhelina Kalinina (UKR) – 4-6, 6-2, 6-2
- Elina Avanesyan (ARM) def. Jessica Bouzas Maneiro (ESP) – 6-1, 6-4
- Maddison Inglis (AUS) def. Donna Vekic (CRO) (5) – 6-1, 6-2
What’s Next for Badosa?
With her quarterfinal place secured, Badosa will now face a tougher challenge in the next round. If she maintains her current form, she could be on her way to lifting the Merida Open Akron trophy.
