Marketa Vondrousova Triumphs in Berlin: Comeback Queen Wins First Title Since Wimbledon

Resilient Vondrousova Captures Berlin Open Title, Downs Wang Xinyu in Three-Set Thriller

Marketa Vondrousova is back—and in spectacular fashion. The 2023 Wimbledon champion captured her first title in nearly two years at the Berlin Tennis Open 2025, outlasting China’s Wang Xinyu 7-6(10), 4-6, 6-2 in a thrilling final. After a year plagued by shoulder and thigh injuries, the Czech left-hander reminded the tennis world of her grit and class, completing a dream run at the WTA 500 grass court tournament.

Ranked No. 164 entering the event, Vondrousova became the lowest-ranked champion in Berlin Tennis Open history, leapfrogging back into the WTA Top 100. Along the way, she delivered major upsets, defeating World No. 1 Aryna Sabalenka, Australian Open champion Madison Keys, Ons Jabeur, and Diana Shnaider—a strong statement as she gears up for Wimbledon 2025.

“This wasn’t something I expected,” said the 25-year-old during her victory speech. “We just came here hoping to win a match or two. I’m very grateful to be standing here as the champion.”

In the final, Vondrousova displayed the same tenacity that won her the 2023 Wimbledon crown. She fought back from a 5-3 deficit in the opening set, saved six set points, and eventually took the set in a tense 62-minute tiebreak. Wang, who reached her first WTA final after toppling Coco Gauff and Liudmila Samsonova, fought back to claim the second set, but Vondrousova dominated the decider with clinical precision.

Despite hitting fewer winners (22 to 31), Vondrousova made just 26 unforced errors compared to Wang’s 44, and converted five of six break points, proving why she’s a dangerous floater ahead of Wimbledon.

After missing most of 2024 due to shoulder surgery, followed by another injury in early 2025, this Vondrousova comeback title is not just emotional—it’s a serious warning shot to the rest of the field. With her Top 100 return, calm court presence, and a proven record on grass, Marketa Vondrousova is once again a name to watch as the WTA Tour shifts to Wimbledon 2025.
