In a disappointing turn of events for tennis fans, top-seeded Jannik Sinner has officially withdrawn from the Paris Masters, citing a viral illness. The Italian player, who is guaranteed to finish the year as the world No. 1, shared that he fell sick shortly after arriving in Paris for the tournament.
“I came very early here to prepare, but unfortunately, I fell ill,” Sinner said in a message relayed by tournament organizers. “I’m experiencing a virus that should pass in the next two to three days, but I’m just not ready to compete right now.”
Sinner’s withdrawal marks another blow to the Paris Masters, following the exit of seven-time champion Novak Djokovic earlier this week. Sinner has had an impressive season, recently claiming his seventh title at the Shanghai Masters, where he defeated Djokovic in straight sets. This victory made him the first man to win more than six titles in a season since Andy Murray in 2016.
The world No. 1 now has almost two weeks to recover before the season-ending ATP Finals in Turin. As Sinner steps back to prioritize his health, rival Carlos Alcaraz will take over as the tournament’s top seed. Fans are hopeful to see Sinner back in form for the final showdown of the year.
