The clay courts of Rome roared to life as the Internazionali BNL d’Italia 2025 delivered thrilling action in the Men’s Singles Round of 64. Italian stars, global favorites, and surprise performances lit up the Eternal City, setting the stage for a fiery path to the title.
🇮🇹 Italian Hopefuls Make Their Mark
Jannik Sinner, Italy’s top-ranked player and local hero, breezed past Argentina’s Mariano Navone with a confident 6-3, 6-4 win. Fellow Italian Matteo Berrettini also pleased home fans with a strong 6-4, 7-6(0) victory over Britain’s Jack Fearnley.
However, not all Italians had cause to celebrate. Luca Nardi fell to the consistent Aussie, Alex de Minaur (6-4, 7-5), while Matteo Gigante was edged out by Czech rising star Jakub Mensik (7-6(4), 7-5).
🇺🇸 American Upsets and Triumphs
The biggest surprise of the day came as Taylor Fritz, seeded 4th, was stunned by compatriot Marcos Giron in straight sets, 7-6(4), 7-6(3), at the Grand Stand Arena.
Meanwhile, Tommy Paul impressed with a dominant 6-1, 6-4 win over veteran Spaniard Roberto Bautista Agut. Rising talent Sebastian Korda also advanced comfortably, dispatching Aleksandar Vukic 6-3, 6-4.
However, it was a tough outing for Ben Shelton, who managed just three games in a lopsided 6-2, 6-1 defeat to Spain’s Jaume Munar.
🌍 Global Stars and Breakthroughs
In a dramatic three-set battle, Fabian Marozsán of Hungary shocked the 16th seed, Andrey Rublev, 7-5, 4-6, 6-3. Sixth seed Casper Ruud survived a scare against Alexander Bublik, eventually pulling through 6-4, 4-6, 6-3.
Elsewhere, Francisco Cerundolo continued his solid clay form by beating Chile’s Nicolas Jarry 7-6(4), 6-3. In a one-sided match, Jesper de Jong crushed the 25th seed Alejandro Davidovich Fokina 6-0, 6-2.
Austria’s Sebastian Ofner edged past 15th seed Frances Tiafoe in a tense three-setter, 6-2, 6-7(2), 6-3, while Hubert Hurkacz and Tomas Machac also moved on with straight-set victories.
