The 2025 tennis season is barely underway, but Felix Auger-Aliassime has already made his mark as the first two-title men’s champion of the year. With a hard-fought victory over Aleksandar Kovacevic in the Open Sud de France final, the Canadian is proving that his resurgence is no fluke.
At 24, Auger-Aliassime was once hailed as one of the sport’s rising stars, climbing to World No. 6 in 2022 and winning multiple indoor titles. But the years that followed saw him struggle with injuries and inconsistency, slipping outside the Top 30. While younger rivals like Carlos Alcaraz and Jannik Sinner dominated the headlines, Auger-Aliassime was left searching for his best form.
That search seems to be paying off in 2025. After an impressive title run in Adelaide last month, the Montreal native has now added another trophy to his collection in Montpellier. His 6-2, 6-7 (7), 7-6 (2) triumph over Kovacevic was anything but straightforward, but it showcased his resilience and ability to close out tight matches—something that had often eluded him in the past.
“It was the craziest final I’ve played,” Auger-Aliassime admitted. “I started great, but credit to Aleks—he raised his game. It was toe-to-toe until the end.”
Kovacevic, ranked No. 102, was the underdog story of the tournament. Entering as a qualifier due to a clerical error by his father, he took down big names like Andrey Rublev and defending champion Alexander Bublik to reach his first ATP final. His fearless play and crowd-winning energy pushed Auger-Aliassime to the brink, but in the deciding-set tiebreak, the Canadian’s experience and composure shone through.
For Auger-Aliassime, this victory is more than just another title—it’s a sign that he’s regaining the consistency that once made him a Top 10 player. He now boasts a 10-2 record for the year and remains a dominant force on indoor hard courts, where six of his seven career titles have come.
Next up is Rotterdam, where a stacked field awaits. But with his confidence soaring and his game clicking, Auger-Aliassime looks poised for an even bigger breakthrough. If he keeps this momentum going, 2025 could be the year he finally cements his place among the sport’s elite.
