In a standout performance at the Nitto ATP Finals, Daniil Medvedev showcased his tactical brilliance with a straight-sets win over Alex de Minaur, securing a 6-2, 6-4 victory. The 2020 champion brought a relaxed “just don’t care” attitude, focusing only on his game to clinch his first win of the tournament in Turin. After a tough opening loss to Taylor Fritz, Medvedev needed this morale boost to keep his semi-final hopes alive.
From the start, Medvedev demonstrated total control, never facing a break point. His consistency rattled de Minaur, who failed to hold serve twice in the first set. Medvedev’s solid crosscourt forehand and calculated drop shots prevented de Minaur from finding his rhythm. One memorable highlight was a grueling 28-shot rally that Medvedev ended with a precise forehand winner, securing an early break and setting the tone for the match.
Medvedev’s new approach, which he calls “blocking the noise,” helped him maintain focus. Speaking to Prakash Amritraj post-match, the Russian explained, “I found the way by not caring. Just don’t care. Block the noise.” His ‘no-nonsense’ mentality was visible as he put his fingers to his ears and signed “Block the Noise” on a camera lens after the win.
This victory improves Medvedev’s record against de Minaur to 7-3 and is his sixth top-10 win of the season, marking an essential comeback after his last indoor hard-court win nearly a year ago. Now holding a 1-1 record in the group stage, Medvedev will face world No. 1 Jannik Sinner next, where a win could see him through to the semi-finals.
Medvedev’s attitude adjustment may prove pivotal as he continues his ATP Finals journey, with fans and analysts eager to see if his relaxed approach can bring him a second season-ending title.
