Carlos Alcaraz’s stunning loss to Cameron Norrie at the Rolex Paris Masters ended his incredible 17-match Masters 1000 winning streak.
The Spaniard fell 4-6, 6-3, 6-4 in the second round, breaking his streak of reaching at least nine consecutive tournament finals.
This defeat not only halted his dominance but also put his ATP world No.1 ranking in serious jeopardy heading into November.
If Jannik Sinner wins the Paris title this week, he will reclaim the No.1 ranking from Alcaraz on Monday, November 3.
Alcaraz remains at 11,250 points, while Sinner can surpass him by earning up to 11,500 points with a title victory in Paris.
Every round matters now for Sinner, who did not compete last year and gains valuable ranking points with each Paris Masters win.
If Sinner captures the title, he will briefly return to No.1 before defending massive points at the upcoming ATP Finals in Turin.
Alcaraz, however, defends only 200 points there, meaning he could bounce back to the top after the season-ending tournament.
Sinner’s indoor form remains dominant, with 21 straight wins on hard courts since his last loss nearly two years ago.
He will open his Paris campaign against Zizou Bergs, who defeated Alex Michelsen 6-3, 2-6, 6-2 in the first round.
Alcaraz must now regroup mentally and physically to protect his year-end No.1 hopes at the season finale.
Despite his Paris exit, Alcaraz’s strong overall season still keeps him in contention for finishing the year atop the ATP rankings.
Sinner’s next few matches will decide whether his surge continues or if Alcaraz reclaims supremacy before the final showdown.
The tennis world now watches as both young stars fight fiercely for the sport’s most coveted year-end title and ranking.
