Ostapenko Stuns Swiatek Again, Dominates Doha Semifinals
Jelena Ostapenko has once again proved to be Iga Swiatek’s kryptonite. The Latvian star delivered a stunning 6-3, 6-1 victory in the Qatar TotalEnergies Open semifinals, extending her undefeated record against the world No. 2 to 5-0.
Swiatek, a three-time reigning champion in Doha, saw her 15-match winning streak at the tournament come to a crushing end. Ostapenko wasted no time asserting her dominance, breaking Swiatek five times and winning six consecutive games at one point. In just 70 minutes, she handed the Polish star her first Doha defeat since 2020.
“I was confident going into the match because I know how to play against her,” Ostapenko said. “I focused on my game and did what I needed to do.”
Despite a slow start to the 2025 season, Ostapenko has been on fire in Doha. She entered the event with a 1-4 record but hasn’t dropped a set in four matches, taking down top names like Jasmine Paolini, Liudmila Samsonova, and Ons Jabeur along the way.
The 2017 Roland Garros champion is chasing her first WTA 1000 title after finishing as runner-up in Doha back in 2016. Up next, she will face either Ekaterina Alexandrova or Amanda Anisimova for the trophy.
“I love playing here. This court has a special energy for me,” Ostapenko said. “I’m excited for the final and proud of how I’m handling my emotions this week.”
