In a surprising turn of events, Novak Djokovic has withdrawn from the 2024 ATP Finals in Turin due to an ongoing injury. The 24-time Grand Slam champion took to social media to share the news, expressing his disappointment at missing the season-ending tournament, which runs from November 10 to 17.
“I was really looking forward to being there, but due to ongoing injury I won’t be playing next week. Apologies to those who were planning to see me. Wishing all the players a great tournament,” Djokovic posted.
This marks a significant blow for the Serbian superstar, who has won the ATP Finals a record seven times. Djokovic, ranked World No. 5, had been sixth in the race to Turin, but his injury has now opened the door for Casper Ruud, Alex De Minaur, and Andrey Rublev to complete the lineup. They join Jannik Sinner, Carlos Alcaraz, Daniil Medvedev, Alexander Zverev, and Taylor Fritz, who had already secured their spots.
Djokovic’s absence reshapes the dynamics of the tournament, where he was expected to contend for an unprecedented eighth title. His last appearance on the ATP Tour was at the Shanghai Masters, where he lost in the final to Jannik Sinner.
The 37-year-old’s focus now shifts to recovering in time for the Australian Open in January, where he aims to claim his 11th title. Djokovic’s injury-plagued season has seen highs and lows, including a knee surgery recovery and a mixed performance at Wimbledon and the Olympics.
As fans lament his absence, the stage is set for a thrilling ATP Finals without one of its greatest champions.
