In a thrilling showdown at the Rolex Paris Masters, Ugo Humbert delivered a stunning upset against reigning champion Carlos Alcaraz, winning 6-1, 3-6, 7-5 to secure his place in the quarter-finals. The home crowd erupted with excitement as Humbert showcased a mix of fearless shot-making and tenacity, transforming Court Central into a cauldron of support for the Frenchman.
Humbert raced out of the gate, claiming the first five games and quickly sealing the opening set in just 26 minutes. His aggressive play left Alcaraz, the world No. 2, scrambling to find his rhythm. Despite the Spaniard’s impressive track record having won five Masters 1000 titles he struggled to cope with Humbert’s powerful baseline shots and quick decisions.
As the match progressed, Alcaraz found his footing, pushing back in the second set and breaking Humbert to level the match. The tension mounted in the deciding set, where both players exchanged powerful rallies and crowd-pleasing winners. However, Humbert, buoyed by the electric atmosphere, reclaimed control and executed a crucial break in the 12th game to clinch victory.
“This match means so much to me,” Humbert exclaimed after the match. “It was a crazy atmosphere, and maybe my last chance to make a mark here in Bercy before the tournament moves next year. I’m so proud of how I played.”
The match lasted two hours and 17 minutes, marking one of the biggest victories of Humbert’s career, equaling his triumph over then-No. 2 Daniil Medvedev at the 2022 ATP Cup. With this win, Humbert becomes the first Frenchman to defeat a Top 3 player at the Paris Masters since Gael Monfils in 2010.
“I went for every shot,” Humbert reflected, acknowledging his aggressive approach. “That’s why I think I had less energy in the second set. But in the third, I trusted myself and made the shots when it mattered.”
The match statistics were impressive, with Humbert hitting 25 winners compared to Alcaraz’s 23. He converted three out of six break points, demonstrating his ability to capitalize on key moments. With this victory, Humbert will face Australian Jordan Thompson in the quarter-finals, who advanced by defeating Adrian Mannarino.
After the match, Alcaraz praised Humbert’s performance, saying, “I have to congratulate Ugo. His level was really high today. The way he hits the ball is unbelievable.” Alcaraz also noted the surprising speed of the court, which he felt contributed to his struggles throughout the match.
The young Spaniard, who has already secured significant titles this season, will now turn his attention to the upcoming Nitto ATP Finals in Turin, where he hopes to capture his first title at the prestigious season finale. Humbert’s remarkable victory, however, will be remembered as a defining moment in his career and a thrilling highlight of the Paris Masters.
