The Lexus Eastbourne Open 2025 women’s Round of 16 delivered edge-of-the-seat action, with surprising upsets, thrilling tie-breakers, and standout performances from rising stars—none bigger than Alex Eala‘s unexpected win over seasoned pro Jelena Ostapenko.
Eala, the 19-year-old from the Philippines, showed tremendous grit and resilience against Ostapenko. Despite losing the first set 0-6, Eala roared back to take the second 6-2. With the momentum on her side, Eala led 3-2 in the third set before Ostapenko was forced to retire, handing Eala a memorable win and a spot in the quarterfinals.
British hopes took a major hit as Emma Raducanu, after a strong start against Maya Joint, lost her rhythm. Raducanu took the first set 6-4 but couldn’t hold off the Aussie’s charge. Joint stormed through the second 6-1 and edged the decider 7-6(4), knocking out the home favorite in dramatic fashion.
Another British player, Jodie Burrage, fought valiantly against Barbora Krejcikova. The match went down to the wire, but Krejcikova’s composure in the final-set tiebreak sealed the win 6-4, 4-6, 7-6(3).
Dayana Yastremska made quick work of Francesca Jones with a dominant 6-2, 6-1 win. Varvara Gracheva beat Rebecca Sramkova 7-5, 6-3 in a competitive match filled with lengthy rallies and powerful baseline exchanges.
Russia’s Kamilla Rakhimova cruised to a 6-3, 6-4 win over American Peyton Stearns, while Anastasia Pavlyuchenkova used her experience to edge Kimberly Birrell 7-5, 7-5. Anna Blinkova looked sharp as she outclassed Lulu Sun of New Zealand, 6-3, 6-3.
