Novak Djokovic has once again etched his name into the record books. At 37 years and 10 months, the Serbian tennis legend has become the oldest player ever to reach a Masters 1000 semifinal, surpassing Roger Federer. Djokovic achieved this milestone at the Miami Open presented by Itaú after a hard-fought victory over American Sebastian Korda, winning 6-3, 7-6 (4).
Breaking Federer’s Record
Federer previously held the record at 37 years and 7 months when he reached the semifinals and claimed the title at the Miami Open in 2019. Djokovic’s triumph now positions him at the top of the list of oldest Masters 1000 semifinalists, a testament to his longevity and resilience.
Oldest Masters 1000 Semifinalists:
- 37 years, 10 months: Novak Djokovic (2025 Miami Open)
- 37 years, 7 months: Roger Federer (2019 Miami Open)
- 37 years, 7 months: Roger Federer (2019 Indian Wells)
- 37 years, 4 months: Novak Djokovic (2024 Shanghai)
- 37 years, 2 months: Roger Federer (2018 Paris)
Battling Past Korda
This wasn’t Djokovic’s first challenge against Korda. The American had previously pushed him to the brink in the 2023 Adelaide final, holding a match point before Djokovic narrowly escaped. On Thursday, Korda once again posed a threat, especially in the second set, where he raced to a 5-2 lead. However, Djokovic showed his trademark resilience, breaking back and forcing a tiebreak, where he sealed the victory.
“I was quite nervous because you never know what comes from Korda – he’s so aggressive and talented,” Djokovic admitted. “When I needed a first serve, I got it. A tense match, but a great performance.”
Another Milestone for Djokovic
Just days earlier, Djokovic surpassed Rafael Nadal’s record for most career Masters 1000 wins. His third-round victory over Camilo Ugo Carabelli marked his 411th Masters 1000 win, eclipsing Nadal’s 410. After his latest win against Korda, that tally now stands at 413.
Looking Ahead
Next up for Djokovic is Grigor Dimitrov, who booked his spot in the semis after a dramatic victory over Francisco Cerundolo. Djokovic leads their head-to-head 12-1 and will aim to extend his dominance. With Carlos Alcaraz, Daniil Medvedev, and other top seeds out of the competition, the path is clearer for Djokovic to chase his seventh Miami Open title and his 100th ATP crown.
As the tennis world watches, one thing is certain: Novak Djokovic’s remarkable journey continues to inspire, defying age and expectations every step of the way.
